New York TRS (NYSTRS) Retirement Calculator: How to Use It
NYSTRS uses a three-stage accrual rate that peaks at 2.0% per year in years 21 through 30, then drops to 1.5% after that. Tier 4 and Tier 6 differ in the first-stage rate (1.67% vs 1.75% for years 1-20) and normal retirement age. Both tiers now use a 3-year FAS. There's no COLA, so the size of the benefit at retirement is what you live on.
What this calculator does
The New York TRS Retirement Calculator computes your NYSTRS defined benefit pension using the tiered accrual structure. Tier 4 uses 1.67% per year for the first 20 years; Tier 6 uses 1.75%. Both tiers use 2.0% per year for years 21 through 30, and 1.5% beyond 30. The calculator handles Tier 4 (joined before January 9, 2010) and Tier 6 (joined on or after April 1, 2012), applying the correct accrual rates and normal retirement age for each. Both tiers now use a 3-year FAS window. For Tier 4 members using early retirement at 55/30+, it applies the 6% per year permanent reduction. For Tier 6 members retiring early at 55/10+, it applies the 6.5% per year reduction.
New York teachers generally participate in Social Security, so the NYSTRS pension is one component of total retirement income. There is no automatic COLA. The benefit at retirement is fixed in nominal dollars.
What each input means
Member tier
Tier 4 covers members enrolled between July 27, 1976 and January 8, 2010. Tier 6 covers members enrolled on or after April 1, 2012. Members enrolled between January 9, 2010 and March 31, 2012 are Tier 5, a transition group with rules similar to Tier 4. Check your NYSTRS member statement if you're unsure which tier applies. Both tiers now use a 3-year FAS window (Tier 6 was changed from 5 years by a 2024 law). The tiers differ in accrual rate for the first 20 years (1.67% for Tier 4, 1.75% for Tier 6) and normal retirement age (62 for Tier 4, 63 for Tier 6).
Current age
Your age today. The calculator uses this to determine which retirement scenario applies at your planned retirement date: full retirement at the normal age, early retirement with the 6% or 6.5% reduction, or deferred retirement for members who leave before eligibility.
Years of service credit
Your total creditable service years with NYSTRS. This includes active teaching years in New York public schools plus any purchased service credit for prior public employment, military service, or approved leaves. NYSTRS sends you an annual member statement showing your credited service balance. The tiered accrual formula applies across these service years in sequence: years 1 through 20 at 1.67% (Tier 4) or 1.75% (Tier 6), years 21 through 30 at 2.0%, and years beyond 30 at 1.5%.
Final Average Salary
Both Tier 4 and Tier 6 now use the average of your three highest consecutive years of earnable compensation (Tier 6 was changed from 5 years to 3 years by a 2024 law). Earnable compensation is your regular teaching salary. It excludes overtime payments, lump-sum leave payouts, and most supplemental compensation. For most members near retirement, the relevant years are the final three years of their career. Enter the figure you expect this average to be at retirement.
Planned retirement age
The age at which you plan to start collecting. Tier 4: full retirement at 62/5+, early retirement at 55/30+ with a 6% per year reduction. Tier 6: full retirement at 63/10+, early retirement at 55/10+ with a 6.5% per year reduction. The calculator shows both the full benefit you'd receive at normal retirement and the reduced benefit if you retire early.
Understanding the outputs
The tiered accrual builds your benefit in layers. For Tier 4, the first 20 years earn 1.67% each, totaling 33.4% of FAS. For Tier 6, the first 20 years earn 1.75% each, totaling 35.0%. Both tiers earn 2.0% per year for years 21 through 30, adding another 20.0%. A 30-year Tier 4 teacher gets 53.4% of FAS; a Tier 6 teacher gets 55.0%. Years 31 and beyond earn only 1.5%, so the benefit grows more slowly after 30 years. There is a Tier 4 benefit cap of 79% of FAS.
For a Tier 4 member with 28 years and a $90,000 FAS: (20 x 1.67%) + (8 x 2.0%) = 33.4% + 16.0% = 49.4%. Pension: 0.494 x $90,000 = $44,460 per year.
The early retirement reductions are steep. A Tier 4 member who retires at 58 with 30 years instead of waiting to 62 takes a 4-year early penalty: 4 x 6% = 24% permanent reduction. On $44,460 that's $10,670 less per year for the rest of their life. Whether retiring four years earlier is worth $10,670 per year is the core planning question the calculator helps you answer.
No COLA means the pension is fixed. Social Security does have an annual cost-of-living adjustment. For New York teachers who have Social Security from their NYSTRS service (most do), claiming Social Security at the right time is an important lever for maintaining long-term purchasing power.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between NYSTRS Tier 4 and Tier 6?
The tiers differ in accrual rate for the first 20 years and retirement age. Tier 4: 1.67% for years 1-20, 3-year FAS, full retirement at 62/5+, early at 55/30+ with 6% per year reduction. Tier 6: 1.75% for years 1-20, 3-year FAS (changed from 5-year by 2024 law), full retirement at 63/10+, early at 55/10+ with 6.5% per year reduction. Both use 2.0% for years 21-30 and 1.5% after 30.
How does the NYSTRS tiered accrual rate work?
Tier 4: years 1-20 at 1.67% per year (total 33.4%), years 21-30 at 2.0% (adds 20.0%), years 31+ at 1.5%. A 30-year Tier 4 teacher accrues 53.4% of FAS. Tier 6: years 1-20 at 1.75% per year (total 35.0%), then the same 2.0% and 1.5% tiers. A 30-year Tier 6 teacher accrues 55.0% of FAS.
How is the Final Average Salary calculated for NYSTRS?
Both Tier 4 and Tier 6 now use a 3-year FAS: the average of your three highest consecutive years of earnable compensation. Tier 6 previously used a 5-year window, but a 2024 law changed it to 3 years. Base salary only; lump-sum leave payouts and overtime are excluded.
What is the early retirement reduction for NYSTRS?
Tier 4: 6% per year before age 62 (available at 55/30+). Tier 6: 6.5% per year before age 63 (available at 55/10+). Both reductions are permanent.
Does NYSTRS provide a COLA?
No automatic COLA. The pension is fixed in nominal dollars at retirement. Plan for no inflation adjustment. Social Security, which does have a COLA, is an important complement to the NYSTRS pension.
