Vesting and early separation

Leaving before vesting and taking the contribution refund is usually a mistake unless you have a specific cash need. That money grew tax-deferred, and forfeiting the pension benefit means you gave up the employer-funded portion entirely. If you're close to the vesting date, staying is almost always worth it.
Lump sum option
Oregon PERS does not offer a lump sum at retirement for the monthly benefit. However, Tier 1 members have a Variable Annuity account tied to investment returns that can provide lump sum-like flexibility. OPSRP members may withdraw their Individual Account Program (IAP) balance at retirement. Oregon has very generous Tier 1 benefits that have created significant unfunded liabilities.

What the present value calculation tells you
